During the second pain attack, after three days of unbearable suffering, she reported to the doctor who prescribed her muscle relaxants and analgesics.
These medicines helped, but at the same time made her feel lethargic and dizzy.
After a further three years of chronic pain and disability, Agnes was referred to an orthopedic surgeon who carried out a diagnostic test. They showed the disc fracture in the lower part of the spine. The surgeon proposed surgery for which she did not consent.
It took another few years before she decided to try other treatment options.
A colleague recommended to Agnes a local chiropractor whom she soon visited. He conducted a detailed interview about back pain and accident at work. He also asked her general questions about health, diet and lifestyle. Then he carefully examined her and analyzed the X-rays.
Although the chiropractor found disk damage, he found the cause of the pain to be overloading the sacro-lumbar joint. It caused inflammation of the surrounding tissues, making any movement irritating them. It also led to muscle contraction in the lower part of the spine and the shoulder girdle muscles, which is why she felt pain radiating up to the polices.
A year has passed since the first visit to the chiropractor and Agnes do not feel back pain anymore.
After mechanical adjustment of the spine, a specialist in movement therapy helped Agnes learn a new way of moving while doing everyday activities. She learned that bending her knees, instead of leaning when lifting a weight, significantly relieves the spine.
She also bought a new chair for her office. Its construction made it possible to support the lumbar section of the spine while placing the legs in such a way that the knees were slightly above the hip line. Sitting in this position allowed her to work much longer without feeling pain.
The chiropractor showed Agnes stretching exercises, which allowed her to activate the sacro-lumbar area and maintain the flexibility of the back. He proposed a set of exercises for everyday schedule.
The purpose of this gymnastics was to strengthen the abdominal muscles (inactive due to lack of exercise), to improve the heart's work and to relieve the mental tension.
The therapist warned that excess coffee and sugar can contribute to the spasm of the back muscles. He also prescribed a nutritional supplement, whose task was to counteract inflammation, often occurring in the premenstrual period.
Agnes does stretching exercises every evening and she has learned to recognize when she is in danger of back straining.
